65 Million years ago Most scientists now believe that a meteor up to six miles wide struck the earth near what is now the Yucatan Peninsula. Huge amounts of dust and debris would have been thrown into the Atmosphere, reducing the amount of sunlight reaching the earths surface. Heat from the blast may also have caused large forest fires that added smoke and ash into the sky, causing even more sunlight to be blocked. The lack of light killed off the plants that rely on the sun for photosynthesis, thus starting a chain reaction on the other organisms in the food chain, including the dinosaurs. |
